Update on my Life and Health

I have been neglectful in updating my blog. It has been since early February since my last report. My life has changed quite a bit since then.

First, I'm married! I am now Carol Hood. I married David Hood on Saturday June 4th. Although I will be keeping carollevesque.com and a few other social media accounts as Carol Levesque, for the most part I have changed everything to Carol Hood. I have some photos on Facebook. I also got professional photos taken but haven't gone through them all yet. I'm hoping to post some of those on Flickr later on.

Just Married

I've still been training for triathlons. I picked it up again back in January and still am going, but I've had a few hiccups due to some health related issues. I have signed up for 2 triathlons though. Orillia in August & Georgina in September. I'm still over on Strava. I'm hoping to do a 5k in July (I haven't decided between Beaches Jazz Run or the Toronto Carnival Run).

As for my health, I started feeling run down and tired by April. I finally went and saw a doctor and she had a whole bunch of blood work done on me. One of the tests was to check my intrinsic factor. It turns out I lack intrinsic factor and cannot absorb Vitamin B12 properly. My B12 was low again (It was low back in August 2014 too). My doctor therefore gave me a prescription for B12 to be taken by injection once a month. However she wanted me to wait until I saw the gastroenterologist to make sure it didn't affect the results, which wasn't going to be until mid-May. I held off, but starting a week before my gastroenterologist appointment I started having heart palpitations. I let it go since I figured it was just the B12. Once I saw her, she booked me an endoscopy which wasn't going to be for another month, so I asked her if it would be ok to go ahead with the B12 injections. She didn't think it would be a problem. So I got a B12 injection the following Monday and after a day or 2 I felt back to normal. My fatigue level started to wain.

I had my endoscopy yesterday and it turns out I have a hiatus hernia and mild antral erythema. The gastroenterologist put me on a PPI, which by the way, lowers my B12. I will be seeing the gastroenterologist in over a month to find out my results of the biopsy. FYI: The endoscopy definitely left me with a sore throat and some abdominal upset. But I'm feeling much better today.

For the hiatus hernia she wants me to go on the GERD diet. Which means avoiding the following foods:

  • alcoholic beverages
  • chocolate
  • citrus juices
  • coffee and other drinks with caffein
  • fried and fatty foods
  • spicy foods (including garlic, onions, peppermint)
  • tomato-based products (tomato sauce and pizza)

What's the point on living??!!!!!??? Ugh. Also common cause of a hiatus hernia is obesity and smoking. Well... I'm currently not obese (I was about 13 years ago) and I've never smoked. Pretty sure, but not 100% sure that the cause of this was the fibroids. Stupid fibroids.

At least my problems are all manageable and they won't stop me from doing triathlons. Poor Dave, he didn't know I was falling apart when he married me!
