On Sunday November 6th I raced my last race of the season. I did a 10 miler at the Angus Glen Golf Course in Markham, ON. It was spectacular. Perfect weather (about 7 degrees C) and sunny. I had originally planned to do a 15k MEC race on October 23rd but plans changed when my husband and I bought a house. Logistically the only date that worked for us was Oct 22nd, which meant no race the next day. I tried to find another 15k or 10miler and found this one.

It's been 5 years since I ran my last 5k race (Pride & Remembrance - 2011). I knew it was time to do another one. I'm still recovery from my hysterectomy last September but training has gone well and I wanted to prove something to myself. I had signed up for 2 triathlons, one in August and another in September. I figured a 5k race will be a nice addition in July.

Woke up at 7am and had oatmeal with a banana. Had all my gear lined up the night before and took my time getting ready. Thankfully I did all my bathroom stuff before I left for the race. Perfect! Left early to make sure I got to the race site.

The 3rd week of IM training had some ups and downs. It started off on Monday with a swimming session with TTC. I had dinner before the swim and was still hungry after eating that I had some almonds and a banana. Stupid move, I felt so sluggish and moved so slow. I even had the pregnant woman nipping at my feet when doing the drills. I must remember to have just a snack, not a complete dinner that close to the swim. Lesson learned.

DNF. The most dreaded acronym to a runner/triathlete ever. And that is exactly what happened to me for this race.

Leading up to the race I had been having blood pressure problems. Tuesday before the race my blood pressure was as high as 150/90. On the 2nd check after 10min, it was slightly lower at 134/80. Much better, but still not ideal.

4:15am wake up call. Ugh, I'm not a morning person on the best of days and 1 issue I have with this race is the 6:50am start time. No problems getting up though and had my instant coffee. Gross. Had a banana with peanut butter and that's it. Not exactly hungry that early in the morning and with an Oly I'm not too worried about having enough food. It was suppose to start raining around 2am, but it looked like it had held off until my mom came to pick me. Then it started spitting, but nothing too hard.

Woke up at 6am, didn't get a lot of sleep some snoring by an nameless sherpa. Got my clothes & walked over to Tim Hortons, grabbed 1 small coffee with 1 cream & 1/2 sugar and some other items for my mother and Irina. I quickly got back to the hotel and had my banana with peanut butter & drank the coffee. All done before 6:30am. Got my stuff all together (which was nicely placed into 1 bag.. 1 BAG!!!). Made up my Genucan (chocolate) and put Heed into 1 of my bottles and had it set up on the bike.

Today is the 5th year anniversary of a day that changed my life. I was at a party with some friends. I had complained about how bored I was of the 5k runs I was doing. A friend, Franciska Kouwenhoven, told me I should do the Harry Spring Run off 8k. The thought of doing anything more then a 5k had not even entered my brain. Thanks to that push, I signed up for the 8k and ran it in 51:45.
