Race Report for Beaches Jazz Run 2016

It's been 5 years since I ran my last 5k race (Pride & Remembrance - 2011). I knew it was time to do another one. I'm still recovery from my hysterectomy last September but training has gone well and I wanted to prove something to myself. I had signed up for 2 triathlons, one in August and another in September. I figured a 5k race will be a nice addition in July.
 

Update on my Life and Health

I have been neglectful in updating my blog. It has been since early February since my last report. My life has changed quite a bit since then.

 

Hysterectomy and recovery

I had my hysterectomy on Friday September 11th. I got to the hospital before 6:30 and registered. This part didn't take too long as I had pre-registered 3 weeks before. The worst part was that there were about 6 people waiting ahead of me but they moved through those people pretty quickly and it didn't take too long. After that I got into the surgery prep area. Again didn't have to wait there long either and they went through more questions. Got some meds (nerve pain & other stuff) and got my hospital clothes.

Less than a month to go!

With less than a month to go before Ironman Muskoka I have been crazy busy with my training. I have had my long swims and rides in the last few weeks. It's insane! Since I have trained for marathons before the running seems pretty managable.

I had my longest swim on Monday July 27th. I went to the James Dick Quarry near Caledon. It has a 1km loop and I decided to do 4 loops. It was really tough and after the 2nd loop I had to talk myself into doing 2 more.

 

Not my best week

Started off the week with some Bladder/bowel issues. Fibroids feel like they're getting bigger. The bowels are bothering during my run so this isn't good. I hope it's just because of where my monthly cycle is. I've noticed just before my period that is when it is the worst.

 

A former classmate of mine committed suicide last weekend. This is the 2nd one in a matter of 20months. My thoughts are with his family.

 

Update on Fibroid news and Ironman Training

I had my 2nd gynecologist appointment yesterday. I had made the decision to get a hysterectomy so I had my list of questions and the doctor went through them with me. I will be having an abdominal hysterectomy. It will be a total hysterectomy (removal of uterus and cervix) as well as removing my fallopian tubes. At this point I get to keep my ovaries.

My First Gynecologist Appointment

I finally had my first gynecologist appointment for my fibroids. I had all sorts of questions for her like what are my options? Wait time for surgery? Medication to delay/stop fibroid growth? But she had questions for me first. She wanted to know my medical history of course. Have I had surgery before, allergies, have I been pregnant etc... One of the questions she asked about was my alcohol consumption. I've been down to once a month, which is what I told her, so she asked if that was a new thing and yes it was.

Over thinking the fibroids

This week of training was slightly difficult for me. Again ups and downs. It started with my usual Monday swim class. My instructor was sick so we had a substitute. She noticed that I was crossing my hands too much so she told me to really separate my arms for a few lengths and then after awhile it would come back into place properly. Tried that and it certainly helped. And Wednesday swim where we did some fast swimming. I found my 50m and 100m swims haven't really gotten faster, my 50m was just under 1min and my 100m was 2:15. Not great, but I'm happy with that. I need to get faster.

3rd week of IM Training

The 3rd week of IM training had some ups and downs. It started off on Monday with a swimming session with TTC. I had dinner before the swim and was still hungry after eating that I had some almonds and a banana. Stupid move, I felt so sluggish and moved so slow. I even had the pregnant woman nipping at my feet when doing the drills. I must remember to have just a snack, not a complete dinner that close to the swim. Lesson learned.

 

Second Week of IM Training and a Bike Fit

My 2nd week of IM Training has gone very well. So far so good. My week always starts with TTC swimming . This is a coach lead swim session. I've been at this since late September last year and have found it enjoyable. I'm one of those people that like to do most of my exercising alone (except long bike rides). But I've been finding these workouts helpful as the coach has helped me improved my form. On that day I had my stroke correct, but wasn't gliding, so quick strokes. After that I was able to get my glide correctly.
