Good bye 2011
2011 will definitely be a memorable year. It started out with some back pain, but after seeing a physiotherapist it worked itself out and I ran in my 1st Around the Bay 2-person relay and my 3rd 1/2 marathon in Mississauga.
I knew after the 1/2 I wanted to get better for the marathon and I wanted to get a trainer. Since I had heard many good things about PRS Fit I bought a training plan from them for the fall marathon. It was the most amazing experience in my life. I pushed myself way more than I could ever thought possible. I ended up with a PR of over 50 minutes.
In November unfortunately I started experiencing some ankle pain. It was a pins & needles feeling in both feet. The right one felt worse but it was definitely something I was feeling in both ankles. I took 3 weeks off of running and saw another physiotherapist. I also went and saw a pedorthist and got myself some orthotics. I started running again on Dec 5th and gradually built up my time. I started at 20 minutes and went to 22, 24, 27, 30 & 33 minutes. I then did a 5 k at 32 minutes and the next day my legs were sore again. I took another week off and still had a tingling sensation in my ankles. I finally called the doctor, but my appointment with her isn't for another 2 weeks! I ended up calling Telehealth and they went through a list of questions with me. One of them was "Do you have a headache"? At that time I had had one for about 3-4 hours. She paused and told me to go to an emergency room right away. Don't drive, get a ride. That just wasn't possible. I just drove myself down there. Their concern was that I was having a stroke. I didn't think that was the case but I went down there anyways. The monitored me for awhile but I was fine and they let me go. The doctor referred me to a neurologist so I'm hoping to hear from them in the new year.
The pins & needles in the ankles is still there every once and awhile, but not like it was last week. For a whole week it just wouldn't go away. It now comes & goes and isn't as bothersome, but there is definitely something wrong. I also went and did something that may be slightly stupid. I went for a run today. I couldn't control myself. I wanted to see if the ankles could take it. They were fine. I ran for 30 minutes and they were ok, not perfect, but ok. There was still some tingling in the ankles but it wasn't any worse. I have just kept them up on the couch and icing them once and awhile.
I'm hoping I can start running again in the new year. I want to start training for Around the Bay again and another 1/2 marathon (most likely Mississauga). As well as do a late spring triathlon and of course, if I'm up to it another Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
I'd also like to set some goals for the new year as well. I would like to start eating healthier. This is going to take a lot of effort. I'm so terrible at this, but I must. It's not about my weight it's just that the last few months I've gained weight but I just don't feel as good. Could be the lack of running (I'm sure it plays a large part), but it's the constant crappy food I eat. I will allow myself to have some days where I may fall off the wagon, but I hope to make them few and far between.
Here's to 2012 and I hope it will be a good year!
