Waterloo Half-Marathon

by Carol on Nov.15, 2009, under Personal, Running, Sports

I signed up last weekend for the Waterloo Half-Marathon. It raises money for the St. John Ambulance. The race will be on Sunday April 25th, 2010.

I also started officially training for the half-marathon this week. I am using a training schedule I found on the Toronto Women’s Half-Marathon website:
Half-Marathon training schedule

I’m aiming for a time between 2 hours & 2 hours 15 minutes. I think it is feasible. Since my time on my 1st half was 2 hours 15 minutes & 58 seconds.

I’m still doing weights (see workout below) but I’m in my last week of that program and will be starting a new one in a week.

Back to Exercising!

by Carol on Oct.17, 2009, under Personal, Sports, Weights

I have started up my gym membership again. This summer I did lots of running outside, but the cooler weather and short days have prompted me to go back indoors.

This week I went back to the gym. I am doing a 2 day split work out:

Day #1 & 3
lever pec deck fly
dumbbell squat
dumbbell incline bench press
lever seated hip adduction
dumbbell shoulder press
lever standing calf raise
cable triceps pushdown

Day #2 & 4
lat pulldown
machine leg curl
cable seated low row
lever seated hip abduction
bar upright row
dumbbell biceps curl
ab crunch on a ball

This is a push/pull workout that I got from www.exrx.net.

I am still going to run 4 times a week, plus 1 day I will crosstrain (either a spin class or crosstrainer). I will only run 3 to 5 miles per session. I am going to train for a half-marathon in April, but full training won’t start until November/December. I’m trying to find some good training programs online as I need to work on my intervals and speed training.

Dancing

by Carol on Jul.19, 2009, under Personal

I am dancing again. I usually do 30 minutes a couple of nights a week. It feels great. I’m definitely out of practice, but it feels good to get moving again.

Here are the songs I danced to tonight:
MJ Megamax – Michael Jackson
Blinded by the light
– Michael Mind
Call it what you want – (The C&C Music Factory mix) – New Kids on the Block
Faster Kill Pussycat – Oakenfold featuring Brittany Murphy
Crazy Little Thing Called Love – Queen
Infatuation – Rod Stewart
Oh Carolina – Shaggy

A good list, going to keep mixing it up. I know… no Madonna in this list. She’ll be in the next one. ;)

Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament

by Carol on Jun.07, 2009, under Entertainment, Personal

I was at the 3rd Annual Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament in Brantford, ON on Saturday June 6th, 2009. Director Kevin Smith was there with his posse.

It was quite fun and I got a lot of pictures of Puck U. You can find my pics over on flickr.

Later that evening we saw Kevin perform a live Smodcast with Scott Mosier at the Sanderson Theatre in downtown Brantford, ON. It was hilarious (as always).

LeVar Burton tweetup

by Carol on Mar.02, 2009, under Computers and the Internets, Entertainment, Personal

I follow @levarburton on Twitter and noticed he was coming to Toronto today. He’s going to be doing an interview with George on The Hour tomorrow.
LeVar decided to do an impromptu tweetup @ Hemingway’s in Yorkville. Well, I ran my butt up there and got to meet him, shake his hand and got a picture of the 2 of us. w00t!

Poison Ivy

by Carol on Aug.24, 2008, under Personal

A few weeks ago I was in Niagara Falls, NY. We went to an abandon factory and to get into it we had to go through some tall grass. My first thought was “I better avoid the poison ivy”. I was wearing shorts so I figured this could be a problem.

Well after a few days I thought I was lucky and that I had avoided it. A week after I had been there
I had two scratches on my legs and I started to itch my legs… a lot. Went to Vegas and it got worse (hot weather don’tcha know). Then this past week the itching was more unbearable and I used Polysporin Itch Relief Lotion and the itching would go away, but then I noticed some bubbling and it started to look infected. Then I bought some Polysporin Complete (with antibiotics and pain relief) and used that on my leg for about a day.

Well today I woke up and the pain wasn’t going away and the infection looked like it was spreading. So I went to the clinic and the doctor said it was poison ivy. Plus it was infected (due to my scratching I guess) so I’m on some serious drugs now for the poison ivy and the infection. Oh Joy.

Pictures of my leg:

Also note that I am on Cloxacillin Sodium (penicillin) and Prednisone as well as Fucidin Cream to apply to my wounds.

Kevin Smith (Sort of) Reviews The New Star Trek Movie

by Carol on Aug.23, 2008, under General, Personal

TrekMovie previously reported that JJ Abrams has completed a first rough cut of his Star Trek movie and now it appears that he is showing it off. Director Kevin Smith was a guest on KROQ’s Kevin and Bean show this morning and the subject of the new Star Trek movie came up with Smith giving a review of the movie in a roundabout way.
